Bladensburg Dueling Grounds If you are a history buff, you will definitely want to check out the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds. This location is just north of Fort Lincoln Cemetery and is the home of more than fifty duels that occurred throughout the 19th century! One of the most notable duels includes a famous dispute between Commodore James Barron and Commodore Stephen Decatur in 1820. Bladensburg Waterfront Park Come get your feet wet at this beautiful waterfront park! Participate in all of your favorite water activities including fishing, row boating, and paddle boating! For those who prefer to stay on land, check out the hiking and biking trails, playground, and the B&O railroad caboose! This is a great option for a family trip filled with a full day of fun. Murugan Temple of North America This Hindu temple opened in 1999 and was the very first temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Karthikeya, in the United States. This is something you won't find anywhere but in New Carrollton! You can enjoy the stunning architecture and experience a new culture at this unique temple. World War II Memorial This is another great option on our list for history buffs. This monument was erected to honor the soldiers in Maryland who fought during World War II. The large curved wall features the names of 27 soldiers who died in battle during the war and a statue of Victory. After viewing the monument, you can enjoy a stroll or a picnic in the surrounding park for a relaxing afternoon. There is always something fun to do around New Carrollton! You can rediscover all Goddard's work from astrophysics to planetary science. 1. The Earth In the Neighborhood Earth exhibit, you'll explore Earth science using NASA technology. You can learn about the clues satellites provide us about the air, water, and life all around us. The Sun The Solarium is an immersive digital art installation that allows you to explore the sun as if you were standing right next to it. You will be transported across the surface of the sun to view explosions of plasma and glowing loops. You will learn more about the sun in a stunning, soothing way. 4. The Moon Experience the moon through the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter exhibit. You'll be able to explore a full-size mechanical prototype of the orbiter. You can view the landing sites for the Apollo missions and study the moon rocks brought back with them. You can even stand in the astronauts' footprints. 5. The Ozone Layer In the Ozone garden, you will learn about the importance of the ozone layer to life on Earth. You can examine research plants up close and even watch live data be uploaded. You will also discover more about missions to examine the chemical content of the Ozone and protect it. 6. Nasa Spacecraft Through the Decade of Light exhibit, you will explore the space communications and navigation NASA has used to travel in space. With interactive games and activities, you can try to send messages from spacecraft to the Earth. You can also visit the Rocket garden and explore the space rockets of the past. 7. How to Become a Citizen Scientist The Globe Hall encourages you to continue discovering new science like a NASA scientist. You can learn all about becoming how to become a citizen scientist and why that is important for NASA science. You'll explore this through four stations. This space flight center contains many amazing permanent and rotating exhibits. You will discover more about our world and space while also learning how you can be a part of helping NASA discover more science. This show is known to wow audiences with their amazing exhibits, latest model cars and displays of historic vehicles. It offers a great experience for you and your loved ones. Come check it out! more The Washington Auto Show is taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center located at 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW Washington, D.C.,20001. This event is one of the largest public shows in the area. They also have new events being added every week leading to the show so don't forget to check out the schedule of events. College Park is home to a wide variety of exciting things to do and is definitely a must-see. If you're new to the area or a local looking for new things to do, check out College Park. We have prepared a helpful guide including a list of transportation services to recreational activities to assist you. How to Get Around Located in Prince George County, the area is relatively close to Washington D.C. With a wide area to navigate, it can be hard to figure out how to get around. The Metrorail can provide transport from College Park Station. In addition, several different Metrobus stations are located in the area as well. The Amtrak is another possibility, offering several stops. And, finally, there is also a bike share system that you can use to make your way around. more Get Up and Moving There are a variety of parks and play areas to explore and enjoy with friends and family that make up College Park. You can visit the Old Town Playground at 7504 Columbia Avenue or James Adams Park at Berwyn House Road and Road Island Avenue. You can find a nice hiking trail called the Trolley Trail. It's a 3.8-mile-long path along an old trolley path. If you're looking for a fun day out, any one of these would make a perfect destination. Events There are several events held throughout the year in College Park. There's a weekly farmer's market on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hollywood Shopping Plaza. The community gardens are available to residents to use and learn how to grow or maintain a garden. Gardens are located in the Hollywood area and in Old Town. The area is also home to several seasonal events. During the warmer months, they offer a Night at the Movies, which is an outdoor theater, and Fourth of July activities. When the weather starts to turn, you can participate in the annual Halloween events and a Breakfast with Santa. No matter what time of year you choose to explore, there's something for everyone. Attractions In the summer, you can swing by Campus Drive and bring the kids to visit the Ellen E. London Splash Park. It has slides, a diving board, and they even offer swimming classes. Herbert Wells Ice Rink, also located on Campus Drive, is open from October to April. If you make your way to Lake Artemesia, you'll discover a large lake, fishing areas, and aquatic gardens. You can also visit the popular College Park Aviation Museum, founded by Wilbur Wright in 1909 and located near the College Park Airport. Here are some places to try the next time you are looking for something fun to do with your kids. more NASA Goddard Visitor Center The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Visitor Center is a great place to take kids who love space. The center is free to visit and has plenty of interactive exhibits that you can explore. While at the center, you can learn about space communications, Earth science, and the James Webb Space Telescope. There is a large-scale digital art installation called Solarium that shows loops and explosions of plasma on the sun's surface. Visitors can also learn about the moon by looking at a prototype of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and examining moon rock brought back by the Apollo 14 astronauts. The Visitor Center has a variety of events and programs for visitors as well; see a full list of exhibits and events by visiting their website. College Park Aviation Museum New Carrollton is also home to the College Park Aviation Museum. The museum is a 27,000 square-foot facility that preserves and promotes aviation innovations. Visitors can explore the museum, view unique aircraft and artifacts, and learn about the stories of many of the airport's "firsts" in flight. The museum is also full of hands-on activities that kids can enjoy. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children. Children one and under are free. You can also choose to do a guided tour of the museum with a group of 10 or more. Six Flags Baltimore/Washington Six Flags offers thrills for the whole family. There are plenty of rides, so you'll be sure to find something for all ages. There are thrill rides that will get the blood pumping for the older kids and the kids at heart. Six Flags also has family rides that kids and adults can do together, as well as kids rides that the little ones can do by themselves. In addition to the rides, there is also a water park that you can visit on the hotter days to cool down. The water park features water slides for all ages; Buccaneer Beach, which is a two-pool beach for little kids; and a million-gallon wave pool that delivers giant waves and currents. Maryland is full of beautiful places to experience the great outdoors. Whether you enjoy hiking, fishing, biking, birding, or relaxing on the beach, there is no shortage of places for you to visit. Here are a few places you may want to visit near New Carrollton for some great outdoor adventures. more The Appalachian Trail The Appalachian Trail spans 2,168 miles across Appalachian Mountain ridge lines, 40 miles of which crosses Maryland. The path is relatively easy compared to the difficulty of the entire trail, with only a 1,650-foot elevation change. As you hike, you will see beautiful overlooks and head through historical sites. You can hike the entire 40 miles in about three or four days if you like to backpack, and stay at trail shelters and campgrounds that are spaced approximately a day apart. You can also opt for a day hike if you don't want to spend time on the trail overnight. The Appalachian Trail website gives you a list of popular day hikes you can do with information about difficulty and parking. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts Adventure Bound Camping Resorts is located very close to New Carrollton, right in Washington DC. The camping resort has sites for trailers and tents, as well as cottages and cabins available for rent. The resort features a pool with an inflatable waterslide, basketball court, park, and shuffleboard. Pets are allowed, and there is a nice nature trail that you can explore while you are there. The area is rural and peaceful, and a great place to get outdoors and enjoy some time away from the city. Allen Pond Park Allen Pond Park is an 85-acre multi-use park offering plenty of fun for all visitors. There is plenty to do at this park, including fishing, renting boats, picnicking, playing on playgrounds, and walking and biking on trails. There are also areas to play volleyball, basketball, and horseshoes. Sandy Point State Park The Sandy Point State Park is on the Northwestern shore of Chesapeake Bay. It is a 786-acre state park. This park has beautiful water views and offers opportunities for boating, with 22 launching ramps in the marina. You can rent boats, but be sure to check out the website for hours of operation. Visitors can try their hands at fishing and crabbing in the park, and there is night fishing that you can enjoy after hours. Be sure you have your fishing license with you if you decide to go fishing. There are also trails where you can explore, beaches where you can relax on, and areas where you can swim while there. Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens At Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, there are opportunities to explore the ponds and hear the sounds of the wildlife that inhabits the area. Visitors can enjoy birding and amazing photography opportunities. There are also events, including the Ranger Programs and the Lotus and Water Lily Festival in July. There are many things to do outdoors around New Carrollton. They have a wide range of experiences that let you explore the universe from your backyard. Plus, the best part is that admission is free. One of the exhibits is "Decade of Light: A Space Communications and Navigation Exhibit," in which you will discover information about different types of energy that help connect astronauts to Earth. You can send messages to a NASA spacecraft, experience what happens when things like clouds block messages, and play with interactive games on touch screens. Other exhibits include GLOBE Hall, featuring NASA Earth science activities at four different stations, and Neighborhood Earth, in which you can see Earth as one connected neighborhood. You can also learn about the NASA James Webb Space Telescope and view Solarium, an immersive digital art installation about the sun. Lake Artemesia Natural Area Lake Artemesia is a 38-acre lake that gives visitors a chance to relax and enjoy nature. Birdwatchers will enjoy the Luther Goldman Birding Trail, where you can see finches, ibis, orioles, and more. If you are interested in fishing, you will need a non-tidal fishing license for anyone 16 years and older. You also need a trout stamp if you want to take any trout home. College Park Aviation Museum Founded in 1909 when Wilbur Wright came to teach military aviators, the College Park Aviation Museum is home to both historic and replica aircraft that have significance to the airfield. The museum is a 27,000 square-foot space full of hands-on activities and interpretive areas. Be sure to pack a picnic for your visit, as there are places to sit outside and watch planes come in on the runway.
