Bladensburg Dueling Grounds If you are a history buff, you will definitely want to check out the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds. This location is just north of Fort Lincoln Cemetery and is the home of more than fifty duels that occurred throughout the 19th century! One of the most notable duels includes a famous dispute between Commodore James Barron and Commodore Stephen Decatur in 1820. Bladensburg Waterfront Park Come get your feet wet at this beautiful waterfront park! Participate in all of your favorite water activities including fishing, row boating, and paddle boating! For those who prefer to stay on land, check out the hiking and biking trails, playground, and the B&O railroad caboose! This is a great option for a family trip filled with a full day of fun. Murugan Temple of North America This Hindu temple opened in 1999 and was the very first temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Karthikeya, in the United States. This is something you won't find anywhere but in New Carrollton! You can enjoy the stunning architecture and experience a new culture at this unique temple. World War II Memorial This is another great option on our list for history buffs. This monument was erected to honor the soldiers in Maryland who fought during World War II. The large curved wall features the names of 27 soldiers who died in battle during the war and a statue of Victory. College Park is home to a wide variety of exciting things to do and is definitely a must-see. If you're new to the area or a local looking for new things to do, check out College Park. How to Get Around Located in Prince George County, the area is relatively close to Washington D.C. With a wide area to navigate, it can be hard to figure out how to get around. The Metrorail can provide transport from College Park Station. In addition, several different Metrobus stations are located in the area as well. The Amtrak is another possibility, offering several stops. And, finally, there is also a bike share system that you can use to make your way around. more Get Up and Moving There are a variety of parks and play areas to explore and enjoy with friends and family that make up College Park. You can visit the Old Town Playground at 7504 Columbia Avenue or James Adams Park at Berwyn House Road and Road Island Avenue. You can find a nice hiking trail called the Trolley Trail. It's a 3.8-mile-long path along an old trolley path. If you're looking for a fun day out, any one of these would make a perfect destination. Events There are several events held throughout the year in College Park. There's a weekly farmer's market on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Hollywood Shopping Plaza. The community gardens are available to residents to use and learn how to grow or maintain a garden. Gardens are located in the Hollywood area and in Old Town. The area is also home to several seasonal events. During the warmer months, they offer a Night at the Movies, which is an outdoor theater, and Fourth of July activities. When the weather starts to turn, you can participate in the annual Halloween events and a Breakfast with Santa. No matter what time of year you choose to explore, there's something for everyone. Here are some places to try the next time you are looking for something fun to do with your kids. more NASA Goddard Visitor Center The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Visitor Center is a great place to take kids who love space. The center is free to visit and has plenty of interactive exhibits that you can explore. While at the center, you can learn about space communications, Earth science, and the James Webb Space Telescope. There is a large-scale digital art installation called Solarium that shows loops and explosions of plasma on the sun's surface. Visitors can also learn about the moon by looking at a prototype of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and examining moon rock brought back by the Apollo 14 astronauts. College Park Aviation Museum New Carrollton is also home to the College Park Aviation Museum. The museum is a 27,000 square-foot facility that preserves and promotes aviation innovations. Visitors can explore the museum, view unique aircraft and artifacts, and learn about the stories of many of the airport's "firsts" in flight. The museum is also full of hands-on activities that kids can enjoy. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for children. Children one and under are free. You can also choose to do a guided tour of the museum with a group of 10 or more. Six Flags Baltimore/Washington Six Flags offers thrills for the whole family. There are plenty of rides, so you'll be sure to find something for all ages. There are thrill rides that will get the blood pumping for the older kids and the kids at heart. Six Flags also has family rides that kids and adults can do together, as well as kids rides that the little ones can do by themselves. In addition to the rides, there is also a water park that you can visit on the hotter days to cool down. The water park features water slides for all ages; Buccaneer Beach, which is a two-pool beach for little kids; and a million-gallon wave pool that delivers giant waves and currents. If you are interested in fishing, you will need a non-tidal fishing license for anyone 16 years and older. You also need a trout stamp if you want to take any trout home. College Park Aviation Museum Founded in 1909 when Wilbur Wright came to teach military aviators, the College Park Aviation Museum is home to both historic and replica aircraft that have significance to the airfield. The museum is a 27,000 square-foot space full of hands-on activities and interpretive areas.
