The history of New Carrollton, MD begins in the colonial era when it was first called "Terrapin Thicket", named for the myriad of turtles found in the area. One of the most notable duels includes a famous dispute between Commodore James Barron and Commodore Stephen Decatur in 1820. World War II Memorial This is another great option on our list for history buffs. This monument was erected to honor the soldiers in Maryland who fought during World War II. The Sun The Solarium is an immersive digital art installation that allows you to explore the sun as if you were standing right next to it. You will be transported across the surface of the sun to view explosions of plasma and glowing loops. You will learn more about the sun in a stunning, soothing way. 4. The Moon Experience the moon through the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter exhibit. You'll be able to explore a full-size mechanical prototype of the orbiter. You can view the landing sites for the Apollo missions and study the moon rocks brought back with them. You can even stand in the astronauts' footprints. 5. The Ozone Layer In the Ozone garden, you will learn about the importance of the ozone layer to life on Earth. You can examine research plants up close and even watch live data be uploaded. You will also discover more about missions to examine the chemical content of the Ozone and protect it. 6. Nasa Spacecraft Through the Decade of Light exhibit, you will explore the space communications and navigation NASA has used to travel in space. With interactive games and activities, you can try to send messages from spacecraft to the Earth. You can also visit the Rocket garden and explore the space rockets of the past. 7. How to Become a Citizen Scientist The Globe Hall encourages you to continue discovering new science like a NASA scientist. You can learn all about becoming how to become a citizen scientist and why that is important for NASA science. You'll explore this through four stations. This space flight center contains many amazing permanent and rotating exhibits.
