The
2021 RAM ProMaster® is RAM's bold entry into the work van market. Coming in either passenger or cargo van variants, the ProMaster® features a wide variety of configurations to suit every need and trade, including high and low roof models, a choice of wheelbase length, and special interior kits dedicated to a particular trade or need. Read on for our buyer's guide to this spectacular van.
Overview
The 2021 update for the ProMaster® has seen increased safety equipment, including a full suite of driver-assist technologies. Chief amongst these is a digital rearview mirror that will be especially useful on those variants of the ProMaster® that don't have rear windows. Uniquely amongst the cargo van segment, RAM has opted for a front-wheel-drive configuration as its only available layout. This bold proposition adds to the possible cargo space by allowing a lower rear floor.
However, this hasn't meant a drop in powertrain capacity. The ProMaster® still has excellent acceleration, even with its V-6 engine, and has more than enough beef to haul large cargo with ease. The ProMaster® focuses on utility over frills, making it the perfect choice for the hardworking driver.
Powertrain and Performance
All variants of the ProMaster® make good use of the same 3.6-liter V-6 engine. This can put out 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque; more than enough to get you and your cargo where you're going. It's not slow either. It can go from 0-60 in about 8 seconds, a brilliant performance for a vehicle in this segment. However, where the ProMaster® excels is in towing and cargo capacity.
Here, it can boast maximum figures of 6,910 pounds of towing capacity, and an incredible 4,680 pounds of payload capacity, far outstripping its competitors. When it comes to handling and ride quality, the ProMaster® offers smooth ride quality, and responsive, businesslike steering.
Interior and Cargo Space
Cargo capacity is largely dependent on which wheelbase and roof height configuration are chosen. Naturally, longer wheelbases and higher roofs create more cargo space, up to the maximum of 4,680 pounds of payload mentioned above. For towing, the cutaway and chassis cab variants offer the lowest towing capacity, whereas the highest comes from the low-roof, short-wheelbase models.
Interior upfits are available for various trades and professions, including plumbers, electricians, and construction. Extra passenger seats are also available for the people carrier variants.
Safety and Technology
As mentioned above, the 2021 model of the ProMaster® comes with various driver-assist features as standard. Aside from the digital rearview mirror, one of the most exciting features is the automatic steering assist. This is designed to keep you on course by dynamically adjusting your steering during strong crosswinds. Other features now include blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking.
While the ProMaster® is at its core a working vehicle, that doesn't mean infotainment systems have been neglected. A 5-inch touchscreen is included as standard, as well as a four-speaker sound system and several optional extras.
